You cannot buy a CVV online in any lawful way. A CVV is the short security code printed on a payment card, and its only purpose is to confirm that the person paying holds that card. Anyone advertising CVV data for sale is offering stolen card details, and paying for them is card fraud, not shopping.
What the CVV code actually is
The CVV, also called the card verification value or card security code, is a three digit code on the back of most cards and a four digit code on the front of many American Express cards. The printed code is not kept in the magnetic stripe, which is why online shops ask for it when the card is not physically present. Its job is to stop a stolen account number from being used on its own.
- It is issued by the bank that issued the card.
- It belongs to one account and cannot be transferred or resold.
- It appears on statements and receipts only in masked form.
Why every "buy CVV online" listing is fraud
Card data sold in bulk comes from other people's accounts. Buying it, using it, or passing it on can be prosecuted as fraud, identity theft, or unauthorized access to a computer system, depending on where you live. The account holder loses money and spends weeks or months repairing the damage. There is no licensed marketplace, no refund policy, and no consumer protection, because the product itself is the offense.
How these sellers scam the people who pay them
Sellers who advertise CVV lists rarely deliver anything usable. The usual outcomes look like this:
- Codes that fail on the first attempt, or that belong to empty accounts.
- Payment demanded in cryptocurrency or gift card codes so the transfer cannot be reversed.
- Buyer card details harvested at checkout and reused later.
- Shops that close once a few orders arrive, then reopen under a new name.
If you want to send money or a gift, use real channels
For greeting cards and gifts, buy from the retailer or the brand itself. Prepaid and gift cards sold in shops and on official brand sites are legitimate products with written terms, and many can be replaced or frozen if the card is lost. Buy direct, keep the receipt, and check the balance before you hand the card to someone.
Treat any request to pay with a gift card as a red flag. Scammers favour that method because the payment is hard to reverse, and a caller who wants card codes read out over the phone is not a legitimate buyer, seller, or official.
Warning signs and where to report
- Unsolicited messages offering card data, CVV lists, or "fullz".
- Sellers who accept only crypto or gift card codes.
- Shops with no company details, no refunds, and no contact address.
- Pressure to pay within minutes.
If your own card is used without your consent, contact your bank first so the card can be blocked, then report the incident to your local police and to your country's fraud reporting service. Reporting quickly limits the damage and helps shut down the accounts being used to resell stolen data.
