Short answer
A friendship card quote runs 8 to 25 words. It names one shared detail: a habit, a place, a year, an inside joke. Generic lines fit coworkers and new friends. Specific lines fit close friends. Handwriting beats print on any card you hand over in person.
Length and placement
Leave the printed quote alone. Add your own three to five sentences below it. Six lines of handwriting fits a standard 5 by 7 card. A birthday card takes one or two sentences. A moving-away card or a card for a hard week takes three or four.
Tone by relationship
- Coworker: neutral, short, no inside jokes.
- New friend: warm, no claims about history you do not share.
- Close friend: specific, direct, willing to be funny.
- Friend since childhood: reference a year, a school, a street.
Quotes by situation
Birthday
Name the trait you rely on. "You answer the phone at 11 pm" is a quote. A birthday line for a friend covers the past year, not the whole friendship.
Thank you
State what the person did and what it changed. Two sentences. Skip the word "just".
Long distance and moving away
Give a plan, not a promise. "Call me on the first Sunday of each month" holds up better than "we will stay close".
Hard times
Keep it short. Name the support you can give: a ride, a meal, an hour of sitting in silence.
Borrowed quotes and copyright
Song lyrics carry copyright. Card publishers license lyrics from songwriters and labels. Writing one lyric on one handmade card is a small risk. Printing 50 cards with the same lyric is not. Lines from books and poems published more than 95 years ago sit in the public domain in the US. Check the author death date and the publication year before you print.

- Pick one memory with a date or a place.
- Write the memory in one sentence.
- Add what it means now.
- Cut every word that carries no fact.
Common mistakes
- Quotes that could go to anyone. Fix: add a name, a year, a place.
- Long apologies inside a birthday card.
- Lyrics from a current hit song on a printed card.
- No signature or date. Cards get saved and reread.
