Get Well Soon Cards: When to Send, What to Write

What a get well soon card is

A get well soon card is a greeting card sent to a person who is sick, injured, in hospital, or recovering from surgery. The card holds a short written message. It arrives by mail, by hand, or with flowers and a gift. The Greeting Card Association counts get well cards as one of the top selling card categories in the United States each year.

When to send

A broken leg heals in 6 to 8 weeks. A card that lands in week 4 can matter more than one that lands in week 1. Send a second card at the midpoint of a long illness.

What to write

Keep the message to 3 or 4 lines. Name the person. State the wish. Add one detail that shows you know their life.

Example: "Ravi, thinking of you after Thursday. The garden plot is watered. Call when you want company."

Leave out medical advice, weight comments, and the phrase about everything happening for a reason. Do not ask for test results in the card.

Sizes, postage, and alternatives

A standard card measures 5 x 7 inches and fits an A7 envelope. A2 cards measure 4.25 x 5.5 inches and suit a short note. One US First-Class stamp covers a card up to 1 ounce. Rigid or thick cards can need extra postage.

If mail is slow or the person cannot read, send a text, a voice note, or a meal. Cards are one option, not the only one.
