Graduation Card Sayings
A graduation card carries a short line on the front and a message of 2 to 4 sentences inside. Pick one line for the cover. Pick one line that names the graduate and one line that names the next step, such as a job, a school, a city, or a move date. Handwrite the inside panel. Printed verse on the front does the rest of the work.
Short Lines for the Front
- Caps off. Work done.
- Diploma in hand.
- You earned the walk.
- Four years, one stage, one tassel turn.
- The tassel goes left.
- Done. Next.
- Student, then graduate.
- Hard work, then a hat.

What Goes Inside
Three sentences cover most cards. Sentence one names the achievement. Sentence two names a habit or a memory. Sentence three names the future. Example: "You finished four years of classes, shifts, and late buses. Your habit of asking questions got you through the physics labs. The nursing program is lucky to have you."
Add a gift note when cash or a check sits inside. Keep it plain. "Use this for books, a deposit, or a plane ticket."
Lines for High School Graduates
- You finished 13 years of school. Take the summer.
- Trade the locker for a dorm key.
- Learn to shake hands and look at the person. It works in every interview.
- Keep the friends who showed up for the 8 a.m. classes.
Lines for College Graduates
- Four years of lectures, notes, and group chats. Degree earned.
- You turned a major into a path.
- The lab coat comes off. The work starts.
- Send the transcript. Then send the thank-you notes.
Lines for a Specific Path
- Nursing: You passed the boards. Now you take vitals on your own patients.
- Teaching: One classroom, 30 names to learn by week two.
- Trade school: Your hands learned what a textbook cannot teach.
- Military: Boot camp ends. The service begins.
- Grad school: One degree done, another stack of papers ahead.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not joke about debt, unemployment, or a "real world" that waits to punish.
- Do not compare this graduate to a sibling or cousin.
- Do not write about a degree taking too long.
- Check the spelling of the school, the major, and the graduate's name.
- Sign with a full name. Print it under the signature if handwriting runs rough.
Enclosures and Mailing
A check fits in an A2 card envelope with room to spare. Tape the check to the bottom of the card or leave it loose. Mail the card 5 to 7 days before the ceremony. Cards that arrive after the party still get read.
