Answer first
A Mother's Day card needs one quote and one detail from your own life. The quote carries the greeting. The detail carries the proof. A card with a printed verse alone reads as generic. Add two sentences in your handwriting and the same card reads as yours.
Dates
Mother's Day in the United States falls on the second Sunday in May. In 2026 the date is May 10. In 2027 the date is May 9. Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The Greeting Card Association ranks Mother's Day third among US card-sending holidays, behind Christmas and Valentine's Day, with about 113 million cards.
Quotes for the top of the card
- "All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." Attributed to Abraham Lincoln.
- "Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children." William Makepeace Thackeray, in Vanity Fair.
- "The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness." Attributed to Honoré de Balzac.
- "A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take." Attributed to Cardinal Mermillod.
- "Youth fades; love droops; the leaves of friendship fall; A mother's secret hope outlives them all." Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
- "Mother love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible." Attributed to Marion C. Garretty.
Sources for four of the lines above are hard to verify in a printed book. Print those with "attributed to" or leave the name off the card.
Lines to avoid
Three lines fit any person on any day: "You're the best." "Thanks for everything." "Words cannot express." A reader cannot tie them to a memory. Replace each with a fact.
Write your own in four steps
- Name one memory with an object, a place, or a year. The blue Corolla. The kitchen on Delaney Street. 1994.
- Name what she did, with a plain verb. You drove. You called. You kept the light on.
- Name the result in one sentence.
- Close with a sign-off and your name.
Length
A standard card measures 5 by 7 inches. A workable limit for handwriting is 30 to 60 words, or two to four sentences. A 4 by 5 card holds less. Print the quote. Write the rest by hand.
Mailing
First-Class Mail within the contiguous United States takes 1 to 5 business days. Send the card 7 days before the date. For May 10, 2026, that means a mailing date of May 1 or May 2. International mail takes longer, so check the posted window for the destination.
Sign the card
Print your name below the message. Add the year. A card with a full name and a date becomes a record, and some families keep Mother's Day cards for decades.
